The tremors, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale were felt at around 11.37 am and lasted for a few seconds. The tremors were at their strongest at Ariyalur, Meterological Department officials said.
There was no immediate report of any loss of life or property, they said. People ran out of their homes in panic while schools in some places declared a holiday, reports said.
