BJP chose Sufi singer Hansraj Hans for the North-West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency by denying ticket to sitting MP Udit Raj, who subsequently joined Congress. The singer who hails from Punjab too joined BJP three years ago after having stints in Akali Dal and Congress. His campaign is musical and mid-way through his speeches, he will break into a campaign song which has Sufi touch. Most of them are eulogising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He would choose not to talk much about adversaries or adversities. DH's Shemin Joy caught up with with the singer.
From the field of art to politics, how do you see the change?
There is not much change. I entered politics with honesty. We can do something better for the world.
Why BJP?
I am enamoured by the personality of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is a man of honesty, commitment, vision and hard work. He works for 20 hours a day and for the past five years, he has not taken leave from work. Where can you see such a person? That is why I joined BJP.
What are the issues you would raise during your campaign?
I am from a family of agriculture labourers. I myself have experienced poverty. In my childhood, I had walked barefoot, without any footwear. I want everybody to have a decent life. I don't want farmers to commit suicide. There should be social security for everybody. I will work for social justice. I will fight discrimination. I will walk the path of 'sabka saath, sabka vikas'.
Sealing of commercial establishments is one of the issues in Delhi. How will you address this?
I won't make big promises. As I am balanced in my songs and profession, I will remain so in politics too. Sealing is an important issue. ALL seven MPs will sit together and fight.
