Lok Sabha on Tuesday witnessed a thaw in the logjam over the Pegasus snooping row as members cutting across party lines voiced support for a constitutional amendment bill to restore the states' power to make their own OBC lists.

During the debate on 'The Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill, 2021', several Opposition parties, including the Congress, demanded a removal of the 50 per cent cap on reservations, while the government underlined its commitment to social justice.

For the first time since the Monsoon session ofParliamentbegan on July 19, Lok Sabha witnessed a debate in an orderly manner as the Opposition put their protests demanding a debate over the Pegasus snooping allegations on hold for the bill. (PTI)

Only SCs, STs notified under 1950 orders to be enumerated in Census 2021: Govt

The Census 2021 exercise, when carried out, will enumerate only those SCs and STs that were notified through the constitutional orders of 1950, the government informedParliamenton Tuesday.

Union minister Nityanand Rai said this in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on whether the government is planning to undertake a caste census along with the General Decennial Census 2021.

"In Census, the castes and tribes which are specifically notified as Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) as per the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order 1950 and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, as amended from time to time, are enumerated," he said. (PTI)

Opposition MPs raise Pegasus snooping issue in debate on OBC bill in Lok Sabha

Opposition MPs raised the Pegasus snooping issue in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday during a debate on a Constitution amendment bill that seeks to restore the states' power to make their own OBC lists.

Leader of the Congress in the House Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that countries like Israel, Hungary and France have ordered investigation into the issue of suspected snooping and asked why the Narendra Modi government is "afraid" of a debate on the matter.

Speaker Om Birla repeatedly told him to speak on the bill, following which Chowdhury returned to speak on the proposed legislation. (PTI)

High drama was witnessed in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday afternoon after Opposition MPs climbed the tablein front and shouted slogans against the govt during a discussion on the farm laws.

Sanjay Singh of AAPfirst climbed the reporters' table at around 2.17 pm and shouted slogans prompting Vice Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalitato adjournthe House for 15 minutes.

Soon after Congress's Pratap Singh Bajwa climbed the table and threw a file at the chair. Later, Congress MPs Deepender Hooda andRajmani Patel, CPI's Binoy Viswam and CPM's V Sivadasan sat on the table.

The House assembled again at 2.33 pm only to be adjourned till 3.03 pm. (DHNS)

LS debates on constitution amendment bill which seeks to restore states' rights on OBC bill

For the first time since the Monsoon session ofParliamentbegan on July 19, the Lok Sabha witnessed debate in an orderly manner on Tuesday as it took up a constitutional amendment bill which seeks to restore the states' power to make their own OBC lists.

Moving the bill for consideration and passage, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar described 'The Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill, 2021' as a historic legislation as 671 castes in the country would benefit from it.

Kumar said the bill will restore the states' rights to prepare their own lists of OBCs so that various communities can be given social and economic justice. (PTI)
