Seventy-year-old Bibi Jan met members of the delegation at Sher-e-Kashmir Convention Complex here fervently hoping her appeal to members would lead to the release of her son Samir Ahmad Mir from police custody.

"I do not know who these people are but it seems they do matter. I have faith in Allah and hope the intervention of the delegation will lead to the release of my son," a moist-eyed Jan told reporters.

She alleged she had paid Rs 20,000 as bribe to police in Sopore to get her son released. "Instead, all I got was false promises. They had promised to release my son on Eid which has long gone."

Jan was one of the two victims of the current turmoil in the Valley whose appearance before the all-party delegation was facilitated by Independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid.

Rashid said it was high time the Centre should put an end to violation of human rights in the Valley.

Seeking ways to defuse the current unrest in Kashmir, the delegation led by Home Minister P Chidambaram arrived here on a two-day visit to assess the ground situation.
