Finance Minister crosses swords with Telangana Congress MP over rupee fall

A bitter war of words ensued between Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Congress member A Revanth Reddy in the Lok Sabha on Monday over rupee depreciation and the overall state of the economy.

The drama began during Question Hour, when Reddy, who represents Telangana's Malkajgiri, while asking a question on depreciation of rupee, referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's old statement on rupee's fall, which he had made when he was Gujarat Chief Minister.

Reddy said, quoting Modi's statement, that when the rupee was at 66 against the dollar, it was stated that it had gone to the ICU. So now when rupee is at 83.20, it seems like it is heading towards the mortuary.

Women's Reservation Bill still alive as it has been passed by Rajya Sabha: Jairam Ramesh

The Congress is committed to the Women's Reservation Bill to ensure one-third of seats in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women, party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said on Monday.

Addressing the press on the sidelines of the party's Bharat Jodo Yatra here, he said the bill, which was passed in Rajya Sabha during the Manmohan Singh-led government around 11 years ago, was still alive as Rajya Sabha never dissolves.

"The bill is still alive as it has been passed by Rajya Sabha and once it is passed in Lok Sabha it will become an Act," he said.

Unsubstantiated remarks in RS tantamount to breach of privilege: Dhankhar

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday cautioned the MPs that they should not make unsubstantiated remarks as that can tantamount to breach of privilege of the House.

During the Zero Hour, Sanjay Singh (AAP) alleged the government was misusing investigative agencies to target opposition leaders. He said that in the past eight years, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted 3,000 raids on the opposition leaders but only 23 persons could be convicted.

Enforcement agencies have seized 3,083 kg of gold till November this year, with Kerala accounting for the maximum number of seizures, Parliament was informed Monday.

Gold seizures across the country have gone up this year when compared to 2,383 kg seized in the 2021 calendar year and 2,154 kg in 2020. In 2019, 3,673 kg of gold was seized.

In 2022 (up to November), 3,083.61 kg of gold was seized in 3,588 cases.

In Kerala, 690 kg of yellow metal was seized in 2022, up from 587 kg in 2021 and 406 kg in 2020. In 2019, 725 kg was seized.

Parties like Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Janata Dal United JD(U) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) have asked the government to introduce and pass the Women's Reservation Bill afresh in Parliament.

"BJD has asked the Centre to pass the bill during the current winter session of Parliament," Rajya Sabha member Dr Sasmit Patra told PTI.

"If the government brings a bill, our party will support it," he said, adding that Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has time and again expressed his commitment to the issue of women's empowerment.

A few days ago, in a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Trinamool Congress's Sudip Bandopadhyay demanded an all-party meeting on the issue, which was supported by other parties.

SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal said the time has come to pass the Women's Reservation Bill and give women their due.

 Women representation in parliament and most state legislatures across the country is below 15 per cent with 19 of state assemblies having less than 10 per cent women lawmakers, according to a government data.

The state legislatures which have more than 10 per cent women lawmakers are Bihar (10.70), Chhattisgarh (14.44), Haryana (10), Jharkhand (12.35), Punjab (11.11), Rajasthan (12), Uttarakhand (11.43), Uttar Pradesh (11.66), West Bengal (13.70) and Delhi (11.43).
