New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday kickstarted the BJP’s "active membership" campaign, becoming the first such member of the party.

On September 2, he had started the party’s membership campaign, and this is the third leg of the campaign, which is finding it hard to find enough takers.

In a post on X, the prime minister said that he was proud to become the first “Sakriya Sadasya” and launch the Sakriya Sadasyata Abhiyan in the presence of party president, JP Nadda.

“This is a movement which will further strengthen our Party at the grassroots and ensure effective contribution of our Party Karyakartas for national progress,” he posted.

In his post, the PM also said that in order to be an active member, a karyakarta has to register 50 members either at a single booth or in a Vidhan Sabha seat. “Such Karyakartas will be eligible to contest elections for a Mandal Committee and above. At the same time, they will get many opportunities to work for the party in the times to come,” he said.

Sources in the party said that this is the second leg of the membership campaign, which was started on September 2, and has till now managed to enrol 9 crore members. “The party’s state units have been asked to ramp up more active members. These members are eligible to contest elections for the mandal, district as well as state committee, giving them access to organisational opportunities. So, there is an interest in this,” the leader said.

The party had started the campaign, first focussing on booth and shakti kendra level memberships and then extending it to assembly as well as Parliamentary constituencies. While bigger states like UP, MP and Gujarat have been given targets of 1-2 crores, the membership campaign, in general, is lagging behind. Workers said that digitising the system, where applications are to be done online via the NaMo App and QR codes, instead of a simple missed call, has slowed down the intake.
