A 41-year-old property dealer was shot dead by three car-borne men near his house in south west Delhi’s Kakrola on Thursday.
Prima facie it appears to be the result of a rivalry over a plot of land, the police said.
The assault was captured by some CCTV cameras installed near the spot. The police, however, claimed that the CCTV footage was not conclusive in identifying the assailants, but the role of a Najafgarh-based gang is suspected.
The deceased, Rajinder, lived with his wife and two children in Kakrola’s Tara Nagar and mainly dealt in disputed plots of land. “He was in possession of many such plots. The murder was most likely a result of one of such disputes,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) R A Sanjeev. One of his three brothers has revealed about some disputed properties. One such dispute was set to be heard in Delhi High Court on Friday.
Rajinder was attacked while returning to his home in Kakrola from his Uttam Nagar office in a car at 1 am. He was near his house when a Maruti Swift Dzire car suddenly overtook his vehicle, forcing him to halt.
The CCTV footage shows a muffled man getting off the car and opening fire on Rajinder’s car. The assailant was soon joined by two more men. They fired for around 30 seconds before fleeing.
Hearing the gunshots, locals rushed to the spot only to find Rajinder’s bullet-ridden body inside the car. They fired at least 12 shots and six bullets were pumped in Ravinder’s chest, head and abdomen.
A case has been registered with Dwarka (North) Police Station. “His relatives have not been able to provide much help to the investigators,” Sanjeev added. Ravinder’s family told police that he had a dispute over a plot of land in Mitraon village in Najafgarh. The police suspect it could be a reason for the attack, but have not ruled out other angles.
