Jaipur: Congress leader Manvendra Singh’s wife Chitra Singh was killed in a car accident on the Delhi-Mumbai express highway near Alwar today.
Manvendra Singh, 59, son of late BJP leader and former union minister Jaswant Singh, was also injured in the accident. Manvendra’s son Hamir and their driver Dinesh Rawat were also injured in the crash.
They were on their way to Jaipur from Delhi when the driver lost control near Naugawan village, and hit a wall and crashed around 5 pm, say eyewitnesses. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Alwar.
Manvendra Singh, who fought the recent Assembly elections in Rajasthan from Siwana but lost, has fractured ribs and injuries in his lungs and chest. Manvendra has been a MP from Barmer-Jaisalmer.
His wife Chitra Singh, who hails from Chittorgarh’s Bhainsrorgarh royal clan, was a textile designer and a graduate of Ajmer’s Sophia College.
Chitra, who always said she was not interested in politics, campaigned extensively for her father-in-law Jaswant Singh in 2014 when he fought as an Independent from Barmer, after BJP denied him a Lok Sabha ticket. She had said then it was a fight between the fake BJP and real BJP. Jaswant Singh, however lost the election.
Jawant Singh hailed from Jasol in Balotra district and the family is highly respected in the region.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted his condolence on the death of Chitra Singh.
