A Right to Information (RTI) activist escaped unhurt on Sunday night after assailants fired at him in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area. The activist, Surjeet Singh, was waiting for a friend near a traffic signal in Mayur Vihar Phase-II when two assailants came on a bike and fired five rounds of bullets at him.
The police have started the investigation and a case under Section 336 of the IPC (act endangering life or personal safety of others) has been registered at the Pandav Nagar police station. The police questioned Singh and his friends to ascertain details about the attackers.
Singh has been an RTI activist for the last few years. He has filed cases against 3,000 property builders and corrupt government officials. Reports said a person was pressuring Singh to withdraw a case that he was pursuing in a court. The person also visited Singh at his residence on Sunday to persuade him to withdraw the case. Singh, however, refused, said sources.
A couple of hours after the meeting, Singh went to the traffic signal where he was shot at. The CCTV footage of the area is being scanned to ascertain the identity of the shooters, a police officer said.
