Indian Youth Congress workers staged a protest on Monday against Delhi University’s decision to call RSS joint general secretary Krishna Gopal for addressing students going to the North-East on a study tour.

His briefing ahead of the annual educational trip on Gyanodaya Express had raised concerns among a section of students over the “interference” of the RSS in the affairs of the varsity, Deccan Herald had reported last week.

The top RSS functionary spoke on the topics of Indian “motherland” and Hindu mythology linked to north-eastern states while addressing some 600 students inside a packed Delhi University auditorium.

Upset with the university’s invitation to the RSS member, general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress and in-charge of Delhi Youth Congress Harsh Vardhan Shyam alleged that the university was blindly following the saffron agenda of the BJP government.

“In his speech, he stressed categorically that people in the north-east were forcefully converted to Christianity. He traced back a history that the north-east people were originally from the Hindu faith,” Shyam told reporters. Sources, however, said that Gopal did not make that specific remark.
