Former Union minister Sarojini Mahishi, who passed away at her residence in Gaziabad on Sunday, was cremated at Lodhi Road crematorium here on Monday.
Her brother, former Karnataka chief secretary P B Mahishi, conducted the last rites. Earlier in the day, Sarojini Mahishi’s body was kept at Delhi Kannada Sangha for the public to pay last respect.
Several leaders, including Union Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Fertiliser Minister Anant Kumar, Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge, BJP Karnataka unit president Pralhad Joshi and writer Patil Puttappa visited the Sangha.
Though best remembered for the much-debated Sarojini Mahishi report submitted to the Karnataka government in 1986 recommending job reservation for Kannadigas, Sarojini Mahishi was also an educationist and a literary figure of eminence.
She served as MP from Dharwad North constituency for four terms and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha for two terms.
