An Indian man asking American singer and actress Selena Gomez to chant “Jai Shree Ram” has taken the internet by storm with mixed reactions pouring in.
“Say Jai Shree Ram,” the man tells Gomez in the video shared by Pallav Paliwal.
"One of our followers met Selena Gomez and she said “Jai Shri Ram” on occasion of Diwali" the video was captioned. However, Selena's attire and hairstyle indicate that the video is from Cannes 2024.
The Only Murders in the Building star, however, responded with a "aww thank you honey."
While several people reacted positively to the post, the video was also criticised widely.
"India's best slogan? Pipe down blud it's not related to the nation, "Jai Hind" is India's best slogan," wrote one user while another said: "how embarrassing and disgusting. would you say "hail Jesus" if she insisted."
Netizens also ridiculed the man calling him uneducated as they expressed their embarrassment after seeing the video.
"See why education is important example here," a comment read while another wrote that despite being a Hindu, the video embarrassed them.
However, social media users also appreciated the man for being proud of his religion.
"All Bhartiya( Indians) including Including Indian Muslims should be Proud of this man. This man is proud to be a Hindu and his identity... unlike the converted muslims/ christians who don't want to acknowledge that they fore fathers were converted," a user commented.
The video that was posted two days back has over 18K likes and has been shared more that 21K times.
On the work front, Selena Gomez is starring in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a sequel of her Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place.
Following the premiere on October 29, the first nine episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place are now available on Disney+.
