As per the decision, BE/BTech graduates or those with equivalent qualification will receive a stipend of Rs 16,000 per month for the first and second year instead of the existing Rs 12,000.
Research fellows who have a post-graduate degree in basic sciences and passed the National Eligibility Test will receive Rs 18,000 per month up to the fifth year. At present, they are receiving Rs 14,000 in the third and fourth year and Rs 15,000 in the fifth year, said a notification issued by the HRD Ministry.
Apart from the centrally-funded institutes, such revisions would also be applicable to other government and government-aided institutions funded by AICTE and UGC.
The stipend is exempted from the payment of income tax. A letter in this regard has already been forwarded to the institutes.
