The epicentre of the quake was monitored at the 23 north Latitude and 77.2 east Longitude near the border of Haryana's Sonepat district and Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district at a depth of 10 kilometres, it said.
There were no report of casualties or damages. On January 19, a 7.4 magnitude quake had struck southwestern Pakistan and its effect were felt in Delhi, Rajasthan and parts of western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
A 7.6 magnitude earthquake had devastated northern Pakistan and parts of Kashmir in October 2008, killing thousands of people. In 2001, an earthquake of magnitude between 7.6 and 8.1 on the Richter scale hit Gujarat's Kutch district on January 26, India's 51st Republic Day, at 08:46 AM and lasted for over two minutes.
Around 20,000 people were killed, around 1,67,000 injured and nearly four lakh homes were destroyed in that quake.
