Sulabh to launch sanitation drive in ASEAN nations

"Sulabh plans to set up a sanitation centre in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh at a cost of USD 500,000 that could be used to showcase its path-breaking technology in the ASEAN region," the NGO said in a statement.

"Starting from Cambodia, we will soon launch our sanitation campaign in 10 countries of the (ASEAN) region. We plan to construct public toilet complexes in major cities of these countries to showcase the technological changes we have brought about in the field of sanitation," said Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International.

"Apart from constructing five public toilets in each of these nations, we also plan to built toilets in 500 houses and 100 schools," Pathak, the winner of the Stockholm Water Prize in 2009, said.

Apart from India, the NGO has also constructed public toilets in Afghanistan and Bhutan. Besides Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, the Philippines and Singapore are the other ASEAN countries.
