The India Meteorological Department has sounded a Red Alert in Chennai as heavy rainfalls continued to lash the city on Tuesday.
Several parts of the state like Coimbatore and Madurai are already experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall leading to flooding in low-lying areas.
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu, will receive heavy to very rainfall from October 15 to October 17 under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal which is likely to become a well-marked low-pressure area, the Regional Meteorological Centre had said in its bulletin on Monday.
Chennai Corporation announced a helpline number (1913) for those in distress. A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges and the government requested people to check the TN Alert App for weather updates.
Developments in the state are also preventing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin from being present for the swearing-in of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister-designate Omar Abdullah scheduled for tomorrow.
JKNC President Farooq Abdullah had invited Stalin, the chief of a key I.N.D.I.A. partner, over a phone call.
However, due to IMD sounding a Red Alert in Chennai, Stalin said he will not be able to attend the ceremony and MP Kanimozhi will fly to Srinagar in his place.
