Speaker M Appavu said he was suspending the MLAs for continuously disrupting the proceedings of the House since the session began on June 20. The MLAs had been demanding suspension of the Question Hour every day to discuss the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that claimed 60 lives. They created a ruckus before staging a walkout.

In protest against the decision of the Speaker, the MLAs led by Palaniswami will sit on a day-long fast at Valluvar Kottam on Thursday.

As soon as the House convened for the day, Palaniswami and his colleagues were on their feet demanding a discussion on the hooch tragedy by suspending the Question Hour. When the Speaker refused, the MLAs stalled the House for over 10 minutes.

Leader of the House and Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan moved a resolution in the Assembly seeking suspension of the AIADMK MLAs which was adopted.

In his intervention, Chief Minister M K Stalin accused the principal opposition party of stalling the proceedings of the House for “cheap publicity.”
