Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Thursday congratulated a woman police officer who saved an unconscious man by carrying him on her shoulders to an autorickshaw and rushing him to hospital.
The actor took to Twitter to congratulate police inspector E. Rajeswari, who carried a 28-year-old-man on her shoulders in a bid to rush him to a hospital after realising that he was only unconscious and not dead as presumed by other bystanders.
Amid dark clouds and squally winds, the flooding, triggered by intense showers and release of surplus from dams transformed several areas here and in the suburbs into a virtual, large water body as streets swirled with deluge and trash, while 14 people were killed in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu.
The depression, that moved towards the metropolis on Thursday is all set to cross the coast here soon while the authorities used heavy duty motors, robotic excavators and deployed its full manpower to pump out water, de-clog drains, remove trash and uprooted trees.
Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi on Thursday spoke to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and took stock of the rescue and relief operations undertaken by the state government in Chennai and other parts of the state.
An official statement from the Rajbhavan on Thursday said that the Governor also spoke to the Director-General of National Disaster and Response Force (NDRF) S.N. Pradhan on the rescue and relief operations undertaken in the state.
The Governor also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their support in the relief and rescue operations and mitigating measures for the flood-affected areas of the state.
The Union Territory of Puducherry, battered by heavy rains during the last 10 days, got a respite on Thursday as the sky remained overcast and the showers stopped.
Normal life was affected during the last 10 days and the government ordered closure of educational institutions since November 8.
Classes for students of standards one to eight were to resume on November 8 but with incessant rains, the government extended the holidays until further orders.

Revenue Minister K K S S R Ramachandran said over 9,312 persons have been lodged at relief centres in the state.
Most districts in northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, an official said, even as the city and its suburbs received sharp showers all through the night and on Thursday morning as well.

(i) 11th November: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places & extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, north interior Tamil Nadu, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over South interior Karnataka, Kerala and heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The fresh rains added to the woes of Chennaiites many of whom are still reeling under floods owing to the record rains that hit the city on the night of November 6.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management KKSSR Ramachandran has said that 12 people have died in various parts of the state due to heavy rain in the past three days. He said that 11 companies of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 7 companies of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in the rain-affected areas.

A depression lay centred over southwest Bay of Bengal, about 430 kms east-southeast of Chennai, resulting in moderate to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall along the Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday, the IMD said.
"The well-marked low pressure area over central parts of south Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and concentrated into a depression and lay centred at 5.30 p.m. over southwest Bay of Bengal about 430 km east-southeast of Chennai and 420 km east-southeast of Puducherry," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
This depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and reach near the north Tamil Nadu coast by the early morning on Thursday and thereafter, likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Karaikal and Sriharikota close to the north of Puducherry by Thursday evening, it said.
