The ruling DMK and main opposition AIADMK in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday traded charges on inundation woes in the metropolis with Chief Minister M K Stalin accusing the previous government led by K Palaniswami of inaction and 'corruption' for the water-logging here and announced a Commission of Inquiry to look into the matter.
The principal opposition party rejected the allegation and accused the DMK government of spreading slander and for not taking preventive measures to prevent the deluge here. There was a decline in rainfall here on Tuesday and in adjoining districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengelpet.
Stalin, who inspected several affected areas for the third consecutive day here and distributed flood relief and food to the affected people said action continued in respect of providing food, shelter and medical assistance to the affected people.
Even as it is reeling under the impact of rain fury, Tamil Nadu is bracing for more trouble with the Met Department predicting further rain over the next five days.
The state government has put the death toll so far, due to rains, at five.
State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said that water is being pumped out of low-lying areas after lull in rainfall on Tuesday. He said that rescue operations are underway by the NDRF, army, and Fire Department personnel.
Across the state, educational institutions in 14 districts have had to suspend classes due to the continued rainfall.
A depression is expected to form over southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal due to cyclonic circulation gathering strength over the area, and the Met Department expects it to hit the coast of north Tamil Nadu in the next 36 hours.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on Tuesday questioned the fate of crores of rupees received from the Central government for the Chennai Smart City project.
For a third straight day, Stalin inspected the relief work at various localities in Chennai amid the incessant rain.
Speaking to the media, Stalin charged the AIADMK government with corruption in executing the storm water drain and other projects.
He said action will be taken against the contractors engaged under the project.
According to the Chief Minister, there were allegations of corruption against the earlier state governments as projects for which funds were received from the Central government were not executed properly.

The S-8 Adambakkam police station in Chennai was shifted temporarily to a house nearby after it was inundated following heavy rains, police said on Monday.
The station is now relocated at New Colony Second Sstreet, Adambakkam.
The station is three feet below the ground level and was totally inundated. Functioning from a building located on New Colony Main Road for the last few years and with 40 police personnel working there, it is one of the busiest police stations in the St Thomas Mount police districts in the city.

Senior Congress leader and former Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Monday urged the Rangasamy-led AINRC-BJP coalition ministry here to provide flood relief of Rs 5,000 to each family.
Addressing a virtual press conference, Narayanasamy said that the rain had played havoc in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. Daily wage earners, farmers and other sections have been hit by torrential rains during the last ten days. (PTI)

Several parts of Chennai were underwater for the second consecutive day on Monday with incessant rains continuing to pound the southern metropolis, making it difficult to drain the water out, even as the MeT department forecast “heavy to very heavy rainfall” till November 11.
