So far 10 bodies have been pulled out from the site at Mira Bhayander, a suburb of Mumbai, and two injured have been admitted to hospital, they said. Some people are still feared to have been trapped under the debris.
All the deceased are construction workers. A relief and rescue operation has been launched by the Fire Brigade and police with the help of locals, they said. Fire Brigade sources said they received a call around 2:30 am about the incident and five fire engines were rushed to the scene.
The workers had put up transit huts at the site and were taking a rest when the protection wall fell on them. It was not immediately known how many labourers were present at the construction spot, being developed by Rizvi Builders, they said.
Heavy rain continued to lash several parts of the metropolis for the second consecutive day on Friday, disrupting rail and air traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters.
According to the Met department here, Colaba recorded 162.8 mm of rainfall and Santacruz received 116 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
Train services on the Central Railways are running late by at least 15 minutes, while traffic on the Western line is late by five-ten minutes, officials said. Road traffic was slow but there were no snarls on any of the arterial routes. However, air traffic was disrupted for a while on account of incessant rain.
“Due to a sudden drop in visibility of 300 metres, all flight operations were suspended at the international airport here between 1000 and 1017 hours. But now it is all normal,” a Mumbai International Airport Limited spokesperson said.
Complaints of water logging were reported from areas like Vileparle, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Andheri, Malad, Dharavi and a few other areas. Over 10 trees were uprooted.
According to the weather bureau, intermittent rain or showers may occur in parts of city and suburbs. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in some areas.
