Puducherry is all set for President's Rule with the Union Cabinet on Wednesday clearing a proposal to invoke Article 356 of the Constitution after no party staked claim for forming a government there.

The decision came at a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a recommendation by the Puducherry Lieutenant General, who said that no party came forward to stake claim after Congress Chief Minister V Narayanasamy resigned before a vote of confidence vote.

The file will now go to President Ram Nath Kovind, who is likely to give his assent for imposing President's Rule in Puducherry later Wednesday.

After President gives his assent, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said the assembly will be dissolved.

This will be the 131st time that President's Rule is imposed in the country since independence. The last time Article 356 was invoked was in October 2019 in Maharashtra.
