"Our new home reflects the overall trend of US-India ties. Our relationship with India is growing and modernising, and our Consulate must do the same," US Consul General Peter Haas said.

The number of interview windows for services to visa applicants and US citizens will increase significantly from 13 to 44, a statement by the US consulate said.

While, Lincoln House will close its doors to the public on November 15 and reopen on November 21, the American Library at New Marine Lines near Churchgate has already closed and will be thrown open to the public after consular operations begin at BKC.

As a result, the Consulate cannot provide visa services between November 15 and 21, it said.

The compound of the new location will house all US Government offices here, including the Department of State, the Foreign Commercial Service, the US Food and Drug Administration and the Foreign Agricultural Service.

It would also include the Consul General's residence. It features state-of the-art green technology, including high-efficiency lighting, a gray-water recycling system and a self contained waste water treatment facility.
