According to the police sources here, the man identified as Ranjeet Kumar alias Bablu, a resident of Chandrapura village in the district, had three daughters and wanted a son. He was very upset when his wife gave birth to a female child last month.

Kumar had two daughters from his first wife. He had married again after the death of the first wife and had a daughter from the second wife, the police said.

Kumar, who was in an inebriated state, had an altercation with his wife a few days back and after that, in a fit of rage, he slammed the infant on the ground, wounding her seriously. The 35-day old baby, who had sustained serious injuries, died in the hospital on Thursday.

Kumar, initially, claimed that the infant had been injured after falling from the lap of the mother, during an altercation with his wife. The police, however, suspected foul play and got an autopsy conducted. It was revealed in the autopsy that the infant had died after being slammed to the ground.

A case was lodged by Kumar’s wife with the police and he was arrested, police said. Police said that the matter was being investigated and that Kumar was sent to jail.
