Lucknow: Amid the nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital, the bodies of two Dalit girls were found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district, about 250 kilometres from here on Tuesday.

According to the police sources, the bodies of the girls, aged 15 and 17 years, were found hanging from a mango tree near Bhagwatipur village in the district.

Sources said that the two girls had gone to a nearby temple to witness the Janmashtami celebrations on Monday night but never returned home.

A search was launched by their family members and the locals when they did not return home. A local villager saw their bodies hanging from a tree in an orchard and informed the cops.

Police officials said that prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide but added that the real cause behind the death would be revealed only after the autopsy.

‘’A cell phone belonging to a youth has been found near the body... a SIM card has also been found in the pocket of one of the girls,’’ a senior police official said in Farrukhabad.

The official said that a special team had been formed to investigate the matter. ‘’We will investigate the matter thoroughly,’’ the official added.

The family members of the Dalit girls suspect that they might have been killed and their bodies were later hanged from the tree.
