Mayawati’s election to the post of national president of the party came a day after her categorical denial that she was planning to retire from politics.

BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra moved a proposal to elect Mayawati the national president of the party which was adopted unanimously.

The BSP also appointed national coordinator Akash Anand as the in-charge of the poll bound states of Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir.

Later addressing the BSP functionaries, who had arrived to take part in the meeting from across the country, Mayawati exhorted the dalits to be united else they would continue to face discrimination and live a life of ‘slavery’.

She said that the NDA government at the centre was not a strong government. ‘’The BJP-led NDA government is not a strong government...the results of the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh have given rise to several possibilities,’’ she added.

The BSP supremo exhorted the party workers and leaders to reach out to the dalits and other weaker sections of the society and expand their support base among them.

She also said that the BSP would contest the forthcoming assembly polls in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and J&K.

Mayawati attacked both the BJP and Congress for what she said was ‘‘pursuing anti-dalit’’ policies. ‘’Both BJP and Congress are not well wishers of the dalits, tribals, OBCs and the Muslims....inequalities have increased during their successive regimes,’’ she said.

Mayawati also asked the centre and the state governments to formulate a policy to ensure safety of the women in the country.
