Aspiring film star Dhruv, son of popular Tamil actor Vikram, was on Sunday arrested for reportedly ramming his car into three stationary auto rickshaws in Teynampet in Chennai.
Dhruv was released later in the day— he was booked under 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
Police said they have launched an investigation into the incident and also to ascertain whether Dhruv was under the influence of alcohol.
Vikram is a popular actor in the Tamil film industry having starred in critically-acclaimed moves like Sethu, Gemini, Raavan, Anniyan, Kasi and Saamy.
Police said that after hitting the auto rickshaws, Dhruv, who was at the wheel, sped away in the car, but was forced to stop after he hit a wall in the area.
One person, Kamesh, was injured in the incident and is being treated at the Government Royapettah Hospital.
Dhruv will make his film debut in the Tamil remake of Telugu movie Arjun Reddy.
Videos surfaced on social media showing Rahul, one of the aspiring actor’s friends who was also in the car when the mishap took place, arguing with policemen at the spot.
The incident took place near the residence of Chennai Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan.
As videos and images of the mishap went viral on social media, Vikram’s manager Suryanarayanan said in a statement that Dhruv was not under the influence of alcohol while he was at the wheel.
“We would like to clarify that the accident happened only due to lack of attention behind the wheels and no other reason,” he said.
