Police said that a man, claimed to be the fiance of the deceased, was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the parents of the woman, alleging she was gang-raped and murdered.

The body, with the face allegedly bearing acid burns and with ruffled clothes, was found lying in a field near a Durga Puja pandal in Ashrampara area of Krishnanagar town.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said.

The parents alleged that after the gang rape and murder, the face of their daughter was burnt by acid to destroy evidence.

The family demanded videography of the post-mortem examination in the presence of a magistrate and that the autopsy be conducted by expert doctors of AIIMS, Kalyani.

The mother of the deceased claimed that her daughter had gone out with her fiance on Tuesday evening but did not return home. Queries over the phone to the man did not provide any clue to her whereabouts, she said.

The incident led to tension in the area with opposition Congress and CPI(M) staging protest in front of Kotwali police station, alleging that the woman was raped and murdered. They demanded that the post-mortem examination be conducted in the presence of a magistrate.
