Remal cyclone is weakening and the people of Bengal have been able to brave it with fortitude and courage. We are watching in case there is any need for any help. Raj Bhavan task force is ready... "Cyclone Remal can bring inclement weather in parts of Assam. We are taking several precautionary measures. NDRF & SDRF teams are on standby, control rooms are operational and we are deploying a whole of government approach to keep our citizens safe. The Cyclonic Storm 'Remal' over Coastal Bangladesh and adjoining Coastal West Bengal moved nearly northwards, with a speed of 15 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of today over the same region.
NDRF DIG, Mohsen Shahidi said that wind speed has decreased and it is a 'big relief', he also said that one death has been reported in Kolkata due to wall collapse.
"The current information that we have from the IMD is that the severe cyclonic storm has now transformed into a cyclonic storm. The wind speed which was earlier about 110 to 120 km/hr during landfall, now has come down to 60 to 70 km/hr. That is a big relief and it is expected that by evening today, this will further change into a deep depression. From the information that we have, one death has taken place in Kolkata due to wall collapse. Restoration work is in progress. NDRF teams are deployed, 14 teams are deployed in major affected areas in the state and six SDRF teams are also deployed to assist... Apart from 14 teams in West Bengal, we have one team in Tripura just as a precautionary measure", he said.

"Severe Cyclone is slowly going towards North, North-East and getting weak. It converted into cyclonic storm this morning. In the forenoon, it is centred around 24 km from Bangladesh's Mangla. Its centre is located 90 km away from Kolkata in east direction. It is progressing towards Assam and Meghalaya. The adverse weather will continue to normalise in West Bengal. The wind speed is 70-80 kmph, it will reduce to 50-70 kmph by evening and 40-50 kmph by night. There would not be much impact afterwards. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected only today in eastern districts of WB. There is no forecast of extreme rainfall today. It will reduce tomorrow", he said.
In a post in Bengali on X (formerly Twitter), CM Mamata Banerjee wrote, "Every year we have to face various natural disasters. A lot of damage has been done in our state due to the impact of Cyclone 'Remale' this year. But above all human life. Fortunately and certainly due to the actions of the state administration, the loss of life this time is relatively less. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, immediate financial assistance to their loved ones."

"After making a landfall, Remal Cyclone moved into the Northward direction…..The strength of Remal Cyclone has reduced from severe cyclonic storm to cyclonic storm. The Remal Cyclone will gradually lose its energy…..Today by evening, it will become a deep depression," Head Eastern Region, IMD Kolkata, Dr Somnath Dutta told ANI.
"South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogly, parts of Medinipur, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts have been affected by cyclone Remal the most. We started our restoration work early in the morning today... We have been able to restore 45 out of the 50 substations that were affected and 80% of the restoration work, be it in the substation level or in the downstream infrastructure with respect to the 33kV feeders or the 11 kV feeders has been restored."
"In certain areas in the North 24 Parganas, we have been unable to restore 6-7 substations because of the wind and rain... In South 24 Parganas we have been able to restore almost all the substations... We have engagements of additional gangs from the nearby districts which have moved to North and South 24 Parganas to help in fastening up the restoration," said West Bengal Power Secretary Santanu Basu.
