Doctor rape-murder case updates: Mamata Banerjee demands guilty to be hanged, tells CBI to complete probe by August 18The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) called off its strike over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata as the union health minister accepted their demands. But medics at AIIMS, the Indira Gandhi Hospital, and other resident doctors' associations will continue their stir until a central law to curb attacks on medical personnel is implemented and a concrete solution found, they said. Later in the day, IMA chief R V Asokan visited the hospital and the victim's family. He said, "If any doctor or the department itself is involved, IMA will not protect them." Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to express his views regarding the incident. He also blamed the Mamata government in a subtle manner by saying, "Attempt to save accused raises serious questions on hospital and local administration." However, West Bengal CM retaliated against all those who were blaming her and said that CPI(M), BJP were trying to organise Bangladesh-like protests to capture power in Bengal. She further stated that she supports CBI for taking over the probe and demanded the guilty to be hanged as soon as possible. On the hand the Kolkata Police also took to Twitter to dispel misinformation surrounding the case. They have clarified that reports of Kolkata Police informing the family about a possible suicide are false. The family confirmed the call did not come from Kolkata Police.

Attempt to save accused raises serious questions on hospital and local administration, says Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to express his views regarding the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case. He wrote, "The entire country is shocked by the gruesome incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The way the layers of the cruel and inhuman act against her are being revealed, there is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors' community and women.

"The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.

"This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like medical college, then how can parents send their daughters outside for studies? Why are even the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya case unsuccessful in preventing such crimes?

" Every party, every section of the society will have to hold serious discussions and take concrete steps on the continuously increasing incidents against women from Hathras to Unnao, and from Kathua to Kolkata. I stand with the victim's family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be given such a punishment that it is presented as an example in the society."

BJP stages protest march in Kolkata against doctor's rape-murder

Hundreds of BJP supporters on Wednesday held a protest march against the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor inside a state-run hospital in Kolkata last week.

The entire set up is geared towards concealing the many layers behind this heinous crime: CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said, "High Court intervention has to atleast some extent ensured that the completely comprised position of the TMC govt and all authorities involved. At least now it can be stopped. It cannot be reversed.

"The fact is that the principal of the college who is to be held responsible was just asked to go on leave. This is not sufficient as he is directly involved in the cover-up.

"It is important for the CBI to take the principal into custody. He should be investigated. It is essential because if the head of an institution tries to cover up a crime has to be held responsible and accountable.

"Secondly, before he could know the details the Police Commissioner gave a clean chit to hospital authorities.

"How can you have a Police Commissioner who tries to cover up such a heinous crime? Moreover, the CM is the Health minister herself. The entire set up is geared towards concealing the many layers behind this heinous crime."
