The doctors' strike in the national capital over the rape and murder of a medic at a state-run hospital in Kolkata entered its seventh day on Sunday, as non-emergency services, including OPD, remained paralysed.
Protests began here on Monday evening. Initially restricted to medical college campuses, doctors started taking to the streets from Friday over the incident at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.
According to an action plan, members of resident doctors' associations (RDA) in Delhi took out a candle light march from outside Gate 1 of the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station at Connaught Place.
Amid the mounting outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a medic in Kolkata, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and will take it up on August 20, even as junior doctors in some states, including West Bengal and Delhi, remained off duty on Sunday disrupting healthcare services.
In Kolkata, Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, appeared before the CBI on the third consecutive day and was asked to furnish details of the phone calls he made before, and after the incident at the hospital, an officer of the central probe agency said.
The indefinite strike by resident doctors in Maharashtra over the Kolkata rape-murder incident will continue, with their association on Sunday demanding that all government-run medical colleges and hospitals be declared safe zones and Central Healthcare Protection Act implemented.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), leading the strike since August 13, said medicos would tie Rakhis to government officials, college administrators, police, security personnel, nurses, and healthcare workers on Monday as part of the ongoing protest.
On Sunday, supporters of arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan gathered near the Salt Lake stadium, the venue of the cancelled Kolkata Derby, on Sunday evening in a rare show of camaraderie to protest the medic's rape-murder incident.
There's an organized campaign being run by BJP by trending "Mamata Must Resign" A genuine protest has been hijacked entirely by BJP, the MP said.

On the statement of the deceased doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-death incident, he says, "I respect the sentiments of the mother. The law will take its course..."
"Today, the question arises of when CM Mamata Banerjee will resign. Instead of it, we are witnessing that whoever is raising their voice against this issue, Mamata Banerjee's government is sending them notice and threatening them...The police are summoning doctors. When their leaders are raising their voices, they are being summoned. MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has been summoned by Kolkata Police for seeking investigation...The government used an institutional and systematic approach to destroy the evidence. Calcutta High Court has already expressed displeasure with the Bengal government over this case. Now Supreme Court has taken a suo moto cognizance in this matter. Mamata Banerjee has no right to stay as a CM anymore..."
"Last night, another on duty doctor beaten up by a mob in Kolkata’s prestigious SSKM Hospital, which falls in Mamata Banerjee's home constituency of Bhabanipur. People close to a powerful TMC Minister, a close confidant of the Chief Minister, are said to be behind the assault."
"..In West Bengal, democracy is degenerating...This cannot go on. Today, we have to take a pledge to protect our daughters or sisters...This society should become a place where women feel happy and secure. We have failed in our mission to our sisters. This is the time for all men to correct ourselves..."

“Mamata Banerjee has become Mamata The Destroyer. She is the destroyer of the rule of law. She is the destroyer of the evidence in the evidence,” said BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia.
The BJP has repeatedly raised some questions while mounting its attack on the Mamata Banerjee govt.
Why did Mamata Banerjee government delay the handover of the case to CBI?
Why did Mamata Banerjee want Kolkata police to handle the case, and only transferred the investigation to CBI after there was enormous pressure on her to do so. Did the Mamata Banerjee administration need the time to destroy vital evidence?
Why was the initial theory of suicide floated to explain victim's murder?
CPI (M) MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, who is the lawyer of the rape victim's parents, has accused the Mamata Banerjee-led state government of being behind the vandalism at the hospital that might have been aimed at destroying evidence of the rape and murder of the Kolkata medic that shocked the nation.
In one TV interview, Bhattacharya claimed the ruling Trinamool Congress planted goons among the crowd that had gathered to protest outside R G Kar hospital. He accused these "goons" of then taking advantage of the chaos to ransack the government-run hospital with an intent to "scare and disperse the protestors" and "destroy evidence."
Out 37 people arrested by the state police over the vandalism, some are TMC workers.
Earlier, the Bengal CM had blamed opposition parties for the vandalism and mob attack at the hospital.
When asked about the possible loopholes in the police's investigation, Bhattacharya slammed the Kolkata Police's probe and stated that the way they conducted their investigation was one of the main reasons for which the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to CBI.
"Look at the way the Kolkata Police conducted the investigation. Initially, the hospital administration told the parents that their daughter was sick, but half an hour later, they reported that she had committed suicide. There were doctors present in the hospital where the body was found. How come none of them knew that it was suicide or murder? Our suspicion is that the police didn't conduct the investigation scientifically as they should have," Bhattacharya told the TV network.
He also stated that initially there was an attempt to quickly cremate the victim's body because the body in such cases is vital evidence. "The Kolkata Police claimed that the family members cremated the body, but this came later. When student leaders like Minakshi from DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) and others intervened, the probe was conducted," he stated.
"Their initial effort was to cremate the body first. Why were they trying to take the body outside for a post-mortem? These issues are coming to light," he added.
Senior doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami appeared before the police on Monday afternoon in connection with posts they shared on social media over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The procession that began at the Medical College, Calcutta, was stopped by the police near Phears Lane-BB Ganguly Street Crossing, and the two doctors were escorted to the police headquarters by senior officers.

Senior TMC minister Udayan Guha has sparked controversy by claiming that fingers of those blaming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and demanding her resignation over the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor would be "broken." His threat was heard in a video clip that has gone viral. However, the video has not been verified b any news outlet. “Those who are attacking Mamata Banerjee, pointing fingers at her, and demanding her resignation will never succeed. Those pointing fingers at Mamata Banerjee will be broken and crushed,” he was heard saying in the clip.
The BJP on Monday called West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "shameless" and demanded her resignation, alleging that crucial evidence was destroyed at her behest to save the culprits in the rape and murder of a medic in Kolkata.
It also slammed leaders of the opposition I.N.D.I.A. bloc, including the Congress' Rahul Gandhi, and called them "political vultures", alleging that they "generalised" the trainee doctor's rape and murder by expressing a general concern over such cases reported in different parts of the country, including those in BJP-ruled states.
"Mamata Banerjee has become Mamata, the destroyer. By her misdeeds she destroyed the dignity of a woman, a doctor who was serving the society. Mamata Banerjee is the destroyer of the rule of law and the Constitution," BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here.
"And see the brazenness of shameless Mamata, the destroyer. She took out a march in Kolkata while the entire country was embarrassed by the gruesome incident of rape and murder… She should immediately resign (as chief minister)," the BJP leader added.
"Today's meeting between Doctors and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare concluded without reaching an agreement. As a result, FAIMA will continue their strike," a statement by the doctor's body said.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh at a press conference said, "...The pain is not political but the pain of the people on social media is being converted into a political slogan and this will not be tolerated. There is no objection to the pain you are expressing on social media and the protest you are doing. You can say anything but the language should be appropriate. It is wrong to spread fake reports, fake audio, fake news about the picture and postmortem report. Do not do this, this is objectionable. An unfortunate incident has happened, the culprit must be hanged but this does not mean that Ram, the Left and some evil forces together turn it in another direction. They could not win through votes but we are protesting against the drama they are doing. We are clearly saying that there should be a death penalty. We want a solution, there must be punishment in the case."
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has called for the immediate enactment of a legislation to protect medical personnel, following the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata.
The party's politburo, in a strongly worded statement, condemned both the central and West Bengal governments for their inadequate responses to the incident, which has sparked nationwide protests among doctors and the general public.
The CPI(M) highlighted that these protests not only reflect the grief and outrage over the loss of a colleague but also underscore the growing frustration within the medical community over unsafe working conditions.
The party also criticised the Modi government for its lackluster response to calls for a comprehensive legislation to protect healthcare workers.
The party expressed disappointment that the government has only offered a bureaucratic assurance to establish a committee to examine the issue, rather than taking immediate action to pass a law in consultation with the medical fraternity.
Adding to the criticism, the CPI(M) also slammed the West Bengal state government, accusing it of sabotaging the justice process and intimidating those who seek to hold the authorities accountable.
The party pointed to statements made by the victim's father who publicly expressed his lack of confidence in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her administration, reflecting the widespread perception of a cover-up.
The CPI(M) emphasised that the responsibility for enacting appropriate legislation lies with the central government, even as the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the case.
The party demanded urgent action from the government to ensure the safety and security of medical personnel across the country and condemned the state government's efforts to shield those responsible for the crime.
It also demanded justice for the victim and her family, urging the Centre to act without delay in enacting protective laws for medical professionals.
Former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh, has been grilled by CBI over four consecutive days. Agency officials were seeking details of his phone calls before and after the incident to find out if there was any conspiracy. Ghosh was also asked about who ordered the renovation of rooms near the seminar hall at the emergency building of the hospital after the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the three-hour delay in informing the junior doctor’s family after she was found dead inside the seminar hall of the hospital is also under scrutiny.
After TMC leader Udayan Guha's statement about breaking fingers pointing at Mamata in blame, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said: "Kitne logon ka hath aap todenge, ungli katenge? Crores of fingers are being pointed at West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to resign. To ensure the safety of women in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee must resign... I assure everyone who is protesting against the incident that the BJP is ready to give legal help. They should not be afraid..."
"Recently we filed an intervention application in the Kolkata rape case and the Supreme Court has taken a Suo Motu Cognizance of the matter. In that application we have highlighted the recent rape and murder cases which have taken place against the women in various states... In our application we have said that in such cases the probe must be conducted through a judicial probe," says advocate Vishal Tiwari.
Who is Gaurav Bhatia? And where was he during Hathras case, Prayagraj, Bilkis, Manipur, and when wrestlers put allegations against Brij Bhushan? First, BJP CMs and MPs should apologise. They all should resignTMC leader Kunal Ghosh
The Trinamool Congress on Monday demanded that the CBI expedite its probe into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh told reporters that although the investigation by Kolkata Police was progressing well until the probe was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court on August 13, it is now the responsibility of the central agency to achieve an early breakthrough.
He underscored that the Trinamool Congress is resolutely demanding death penalty for the culprits and is calling for an immediate resolution to the case.
"Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said if necessary, the probe would be handed over to the CBI. Kolkata Police made an arrest within 12 hours of starting the investigation. The CM only sought time until last Sunday, but the probe was handed to the CBI before that," Ghosh said.
He added, "Now justice must be delivered by the CBI. The central agency should provide all information in its case diary when the accused are presented in court on August 23 after serving 14 days in police custody."
The accused Sanjoy Roy's mother-in-law in a startling statement said that while he may have thrashed her daughter when she was pregnant with his child, Roy didn't have the "capacity" to rape and murder the Kolkata medic all on his own.
She said, "My relations with him were very tense...They were married for 2 years...His marriage to my daughter was his second marriage...Initially, everything was good for 6 months. When she was 3-month pregnant, he caused a miscarriage. He thrashed her, a police complaint was registered for the same. Following this, my daughter continued being ill, I bore all her expenses for medicines... Sanjoy was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won't speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone. He doesn't have the capacity to do it alone..."
