NHRC issues notice to Kolkata Police chief over 'brutal force' used during protests

The National Human Rights commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kolkata Police commissioner over the alleged use of excessive and brutal force on August 27 on protesters, who were demonstrating to demand justice for the victim in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case.

The NHRC has sought an action-taken report from the police commissioner in two weeks.

The notice was issued on Thursday following a complaint from one O P Vyas from the Bharatiya Human Rights Initiative (BHIM).

The Trinamool Congress students wing on Friday staged demonstrations before several colleges in Kolkata demanding amendment of the prevailing law against rape to ensure capital punishment for the offender after conviction in a fast track court.

The Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) members also called for a faster CBI probe into the alleged rape and murder case in the RG Kar Hospital.

Speaking to the press after he was stopped, Chowdhury said, "...I thought it is important to express my sympathy and support to these protesting doctors. I'm not here as a politician but as a person..." He added, "I have met the family members of the victim at their residence. I met them on August 14, and have met them again today. I have assured them that the entire nation is with them and they shouldn't lose hope."

The steps she has taken for women are truly historic. First of all, BJP should clarify its stance on what it will do to support bringing the law in the Legislative Assembly. The letter that PM Modi received from Mamata Banerjee was written for the daughters of this country. We hope that PM Modi will take West Bengal CM's letter seriously and stand with her on this issue."
