The first call at 10:53 AM urged the parents to come immediately but did not elaborate on their daughter's condition. The second call was made when they were already on their way. It was only the third call when they were informed that their daughter had died by suicide.
The first and third calls were from an individual identifying themselves as the Assistant Superintendent of the hospital. "The matter is that your daughter has probably died by suicide. She is dead, police are here, we are all here, please come as soon as possible," the woman reportedly said on the third call.
BJP's Amit Malviya cast doubt on the veracity of Mukherjee's statements with a post on X stating "The Union Home Ministry has initiated disciplinary proceeding against both, Commissioner of Kolkata Police Vineet Goyal and Indira Mukherjee (seen in the video), for maligning the office of West Bengal Governor, by promoting and spreading canards. So, not sure how credible her briefings are in a matter as sensitive as the rape and murder of the lady doctor at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
In this case, parents of the victim have debunked Indira Mukherjee's version, saying she wasn't even present there, to provide an account. The father has rejected her claims as an outright lie.
The more Mamata Banerjee tries to cover up, the more things are unraveling. To start with, she should stop hiding behind the police. West Bengal is not a police state."
The mother of a 31-year-old trainee woman doctor, who was raped and murdered at the hospital on August 9, said that they are hurt by the chief minister's remark, adding, "The whole world stands by my daughter. They are protesting, agitating for justice. And she says we do not want justice. I want them (protestors) to continue the movement until they get justice. The Chief Minister said the family does not want justice! Mamata has no son or daughter herself, so she cannot understand the pain of losing a child."
Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday in a post on X had clarified that she did not threaten junior doctors at state-run hospitals, who have been continuing ceasework to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a woman medic. Banerjee said that some people accused her of threatening the agitating junior doctors, which is "completely false".
The police have initiated action against three YouTubers in the matter, said the Editor East of CNN News18
On September 2, a Committee meeting will decide when the bill related to punishment for rape will be presented in the special session of the Assembly, as well as what other programs will be held in this special session: Biman Banerjee, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly (ANI)
He slammed Mamata over her 'unrest' remark.
in a stinging X post, slamming the Bengal CM, BJP's Amit Malviya said, "Mamata Banerjee is a LIAR. Smt Annapurna Devi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development, responded to West Bengal Chief Minister on 25th Aug 2024. In her letter, in point 4, she specifically mentions West Bengal Govt NOT setting up even a single Fast Track Court for addressing rape and POCSO related cases. Quote As regards Fast Track Special Courts, it is stated that for expeditious trial and disposal of pending cases pertaining to Rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, in a time bound manner, a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (60:40 sharing basis) i.e. Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) scheme was launched in October 2019. As of 30.06.2024, 752 FTSCs including 409 exclusive POCSO Courts are functional in 30 States / UTs which have disposed of more than 2,53,000 cases since the inception of scheme. Under the scheme, the State of West Bengal was allocated a total of 123 FTSCs, which included 20 exclusive POCSO Courts and 103 combined FTSCs dealing with both rape and POCSO Act cases. However, none of these courts had been operationalized till mid-June, 2023. The State of West Bengal communicated its willingness to participate in the Scheme vide letter dated 08.06.2023, committing to start 7 FTSCs. Under the revised target, West Bengal has been allocated 17 FTSCs, of which only 6 exclusive POCSO Courts have been operationalized as of 30.06.2024. In spite of a pendency of 48,600 rape and POCSO cases in West Bengal, the State Government has not taken any steps to start the remaining 11 FTSCs. Action in this regard is pending with the state government. Unquote It is incumbent on Mamata Banerjee to explain why West Bengal Govt hasn’t done anything for implementing the stringent rules and regulations, which exist for protecting women and girl. Stop writing letters. ANSWER the questions. You are ACCOUNTABLE."
While addressing the theme 'Role of Women in Viksit Bharat’ at Bharati College in Janakpuri, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar says, "A place where women don't find themselves safe, that place can't be a civilised society, that democracy is disgraced... today, the fear in the mind of our girls and women is a cause of national concern. How can in the land of India, girls and women be unsafe? ...how can there be rape and murder in a hospital when the woman doctor is in service of humanity, saving the lives of others? This is painful...President, who is a tribal woman...she was constrained to express herself...she said, enough is enough..."
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul during the symbolic 'lock' protest, said, "The overall women leadership of BJP has put a symbolic lock here (on the West Bengal Women's Commission office) today because the Women's of West Commission of West Bengal does not do any work. Their salaries and facilities are being provided from our tax money but today these people do not raise their voices against the atrocities being committed on the women of Bengal every day, they only flatter the Chief Minister ..."
BJP leader Locket Chatterjee added, "The women's commission is not doing any work... The West Bengal government tampered with the evidence. Why didn't they report it to the National Women's Commission?... This is not a commission, it is TMC's office...The State Women's Commission should not speak about UP, Bihar or Manipur. First, they should speak about West Bengal..."
Congress leader Chowdhury has implied that the Mamata-led TMC govt in West Bengal had deliberately wiped out evidence in the Kolkata rape-murder case. He said, "I am not at all satisfied with the investigation being done either by state or central agencies because each agency has proved itself ineffective in dealing with this heinous and brutal crime. The ruling party, in collusion with police and hospital authority, have left no stone unturned in order to wipe out available evidence. There is a sinister design being played by some vested interests which resulted in this heinous crime. The victim’s family was misguided and given misinformation."
Showing photographic evidence to back up her claims, DCP Central Indira Mukherjee of Kolkata Police, that the investigation was in no way tampered with. Citing the photo that is circulating as 'proof' that unknown people accessed the crime scene, she claimed that the police had been able to 'identify each and everyone who was there in this picture'.
At a press conference she said, "We have seen that there is one particular news channel which has shown a video and some pictures of the seminar hall which is the place of occurrence of this case. There it has been seen that inside the cordoned off area, many people are standing and talking, and it is not clear who are these people. It has been alleged that there are probably some people who were not supposed to be there and there has been some tampering of evidence. We have taken a still from that video... We have been able to identify each and everyone who was there in this picture... Right behind the cordon is the dead body... We have a videographer from the detective department, Commissioner of Police, Additional CP-1, Lady Police and forensic officials here. All are known to us and identified. There is also another picture and a new set of people. We have the witness doctor, FSL, fingerprint expert, the ACP of the detective department, the videographer, additional CP -1 and the forensic officials. This picture or the video is of the time when the inquest process was over... At no point in time could anybody enter this area who was not authorised. Nobody entered who was not associated with the investigation process..."
Robert Vadra, husband of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, has voiced his concern over the Kolkata rape and murder of a trainee doctor. In a conversation with ANI in Hyderabad, Telangana, Vadra said, "I am deeply troubled by the situation in our country where women face numerous challenges. Ensuring women's safety is paramount. It's shameful that administrations and associations are failing to deliver justice and are instead covering up cases."
He added, "I'm very upset and troubled by the events there (in West Bengal). We must move beyond party politics and focus on the safety of women. Justice for the family is essential, and I will do my utmost to highlight these issues and ensure pressure is applied for justice."
