New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet women from Sandeshkhali on March 6 who have levelled allegations of sexual harassment and extortion against leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
BJP MP and president of the West Bengal unit Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday said the prime minister is scheduled to address a rally on March 6 in Barasat, which is situated close to Sandeshkhali, the island district that is in the midst of a political tug-of-war between the BJP and the TMC.
“Today, we came to know that the Prime Minister will be visiting the state on March 6 and will address a women's rally at Barasat. If the sisters and mothers of Sandeshkhali want to meet Modi, we will definitely arrange it,” Majumdar told reporters.
The prime minister is likely to address the workers of Mahila Morcha on March 6. Mahila Morcha president Vanathi Srinivasan said that while they have not organised any such meet with the affected women, the wing’s state unit has been carrying out protests. “All the Mahila Morcha’s state units have carried out protests in all state capitals on the Sandeshkhali issue,” Srinivasan said.
Leaders of the Mahila Morcha also plan to carry out rallies in major cities on February 27, where effigies of Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will be burned.
A large number of women in Sandeshkhali have accused Trinamool Congress strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of "land-grab and sexually assaulting" them under coercion.
Shajahan has been absconding after a mob, allegedly affiliated with him, attacked Enforcement Directorate officials who had gone to search his premises in connection with a ration scam on January 5.
