Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wondered what the governments of the states ruled by the Congress had done so far to prevent rapes.

“The Congress is in power in many states. I want to ask them what you have done to prevent the rapes,” Banerjee said at an event in Kolkata.

Her comment was a veiled riposte to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement on the rape and murder of a young doctor at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Rahul on Wednesday posted on X that the attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raised serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.

His comment upset the TMC, the partner of the Congress in the I.N.D.I.A bloc of the opposition parties.

Banerjee, however, avoided directly referring to Rahul.
