A 24-year-old woman was arrested for alleged involvement in killing her 60-year-old mother-in-law in Chhawla area over threats that she would reveal her extra-marital affair to her husband.

Her school time boyfriend and one his accomplice were also arrested for carrying out the attack during the wee hours of August 13, police said on Friday.

Poonam, a resident of Roshan Vihar, Sushil Kumar, 29, of New Roshan Pura and Deepak, 26, Sushil’s brother-in-law are the accused.

“Weapons of offence – a knife and a hockey stick – have been recovered,” said Ravi Shanker, additional deputy commissioner of police (south west).

Poonam has confessed that her marriage was solemnised against her will in 2008.  But she continued to be in touch with her boyfriend Sushil.

“He used to come to her Roshan Vihar residence when her in-laws were away. Of late, Sushil was seen by Krishna, her mother-in-law, who threatened to reveal this relationship to her husband,” Shanker added.

Due to the threat, Poonam and Sushil decided to eliminate Krishna and carried out the attack on Monday.

Initially, it was believed that Krishna was stabbed to death and her husband was injured by three men who targeted their residence for burglary.

She screamed

Krishna was in her first-floor room when her husband Jagdish Chand, 65, heard her screaming for help at around 2 am.

“When Jagdish rushed to the room, he saw two men aged about 25-26 years attacking Krishna with a knife. Another person was ransacking the room and they also attacked Jagdish when he rushed to help his wife,” Shanker added.

The intruders inflicted knife wounds on Jagdish and beat him up with a hockey stick before fleeing with cash, jewellery and several documents.

Despite being injured, Jagdish managed to go downstairs to inform his son Manoj, who approached police.

“Krishna’s body was found lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit. Krishna and Jagdish were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where Krishna was declared brought dead,” Shanker said.

Jagdish, a peon at Rao Mohar Singh Memorial School in Najafgarh, was discharged after first-aid treatment.

During investigation, police found that a family member might be involved in the case.

Strangers visit house

“It came to light that some strangers used to visit Krishna’s house, which she used to oppose and had cautioned her daughter-in-law in this context,” Shanker added.

Subsequently, Poonam was detained and interrogated. There were several discrepancies in her statement, but when confronted with hard facts, she could not give any satisfactory reply and broke down.

A case has been lodged against Poonam, Sushil and Deepak at Chhawala police station. The charges are of murder, robbery and causing hurt under sections 302, 392 and 394 of the Indian Penal Code.
