Last year, Apple made a bold announcement that it would turn carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030, 20 years ahead of the target set by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).
In that order, the company later in the year in September reduced 70-percent of the contents including the Earpods and charging adaptors in the product's retail package. This did not just the apply to latest iPhone 12 series, but also all old iPhone, Watch and iPad variants being sold from October 2020.
Apparently, this would help the company cut down on the environmental impact due to mining minerals for making iPhones and components and thus reduce 2 million metric tons of carbon annually.
Now, the company has announced that around 110 Apple's supplier companies around the world including some India-based partners are moving to 100 per cent renewable energy for their Apple production, with nearly 8 gigawatts of planned clean energy set to come online.
The company says it can avoid over 15 million metric tons of CO2e annually — the equivalent of taking more than 3.4 million cars off the road each year, and a major energy storage project in California will pilot new solutions for renewable infrastructure.
"We are firmly committed to helping our suppliers become carbon neutral by 2030 and are thrilled that companies who’ve joined us span industries and countries around the world, including Germany, China, the US, India, and France," said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.
“In a year like no other, Apple continued to work with a global network of colleagues, companies, and advocates — including the communities most impacted by climate change — to help further our efforts to make everything we do a force for good in people’s lives and the environment," Jackson added.
As part of the mission, Apple will educate its suppliers through advanced and customized training on best practices of creating and utilising renewable energy from leading experts.
Apple’s suppliers with operations in India too, have steadily joined Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Programme. Recently, Yuto and CCL joined the campaign.
Apple has set an ambitious target to make all new products sold in 2030, will have zero impact on the planet's environment. Also, they can be recycled 100 per cent and nothing will go to waste.
So far, the company’s carbon footprint has decreased by 40 percent, marking steady progress toward its 2030 target.
Apple is setting up one of the largest battery projects in the US, California Flats — an industry-leading, grid-scale energy storage project capable of storing 240 megawatt-hours of energy, enough to power over 7,000 homes for one day.
