The typical lazy Sunday morning was nowhere in evidence as people poured in from all walks of life to show their love for running as well as spread a message.
It also was an opportunity for many aspiring athletes in India to catch a view of the celebrated long-distance runners of the world.
Celebrities, corporates, social organisations, retired professionals, men, women, children and even the politicians painted the Sree Kanteerava stadium with every possible hue to mark the second edition of the event. The conclusion of the much anticipated elite races made way for fun, excitement and frolic. Who better to flag off the Open event category than our very own Deepika Padukone? Upon spotting her, many -- mostly men -- temporarily forgot about the race and stopped to take photographs!
Just after the finish line, two participants were the centre of attraction. While a man was dressed like a peacock, the woman appeared in the universally acknowledged attire of a clown. Completely concealed in peacock colour make-up, the man identified himself as Pete Raja, a radio jockey in Radio Mirchi.
“My initial plan was to display photographs of ten famous Bangaloreans on the feathers. But I dropped the idea because there have been many who have been instrumental in shaping the City. The reason for choosing the national bird is because no bird appears more beautiful than a peacock showing off his plumage,” said Raja, who had dressed up as Ravana in the last edition.
Gladys Stonsils, the ‘clown’, displayed wit to go with her outfit when she was asked about her age. “I’m neither older than Vijay Mallya, nor younger than Shah Rukh Khan.”
The event saw many differently abled athletes too taking part. With 29 participants from her charitable organisation Moblity India, its vice-president Satyavathi Shamsundar, confined to a wheelchair since childhood, said she was happy to see such a good response.
With the clock slowly ticking towards 11’o clock, the track turned into a dance floor as the gathering danced goodbye to race day.
