Promoted Jawahar Union pulled off a major upset in the BDFA Super Division League Championship here on Tuesday, shocking former champions Hindustan Aeronautics Sports Club 1-0.

Jawahar, battling relegation with just two points from six outings, struck as early as in the fourth minute through Chintan before guarding their fort doggedly to script a memorable win at the Bangalore Football Stadium.

While Chintan was definitely the hero of the day, credit needs to be showered on goalkeeper Ranvijay, who pulled off five crucial saves, including a stoppage-time penalty from Josy, that triggered wild celebrations in their camp.

Jawahar made a dream start to the contest when Desai crossed from the right and Chintan converted without any mistake. Having gained the surprise lead, Jawahar then resorted to defensive tactics, asking the Aircraftmen to have a crack at them.

Going all out, HASC deployed three strikers up front, creating as many as 12 chances but squandered all of them as Jawahar guarded their fort resolutely.

After firing blanks repeatedly, HASC received a brilliant chance to split points with Jawahar when keeper Ranvijay brought down Karthikeyan.

Despite the error that could have nearly cost them a deserved win, Ranvijay quickly composed himself, diving full length to his right and pulling off a brilliant save.

Results: ‘A’ Division: Bangalore Kickers: 2 (Raghu 29th, 33rd) bt DYES: 1 (Mazar Hussain 70th).

Wednesday fixtures: ‘A’ Division: Tilak Memorial vs Postal Department; Super Division: ADE vs ASC.
