Mumbai: Hours after Swapnil Kusale won India's first-ever Olympic medal in 50m Rifle 3 Positions event and the country's third medal in shooting at Paris Olympics Games, the Central Railway has honoured him with a promotion.

Olympic Bronze medalist Kusale, who was working as a Commercial cum Ticket Clerk of the Central Railway in Pune, has been promoted as Officer on Special Duty, Sports Cell, Mumbai.

A notice issued by the Central Railway on August 1, the day he won the medal, said that the bronze medalist was being granted first out of turn promotion. In that regard, Kusale was being promoted as OSD Sports in Level-08 in Sports Cell, HQ Office, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai, against the vacant Jr. Scale/ Group "B", post of the Mechanical Department transferred for operation as OSD (Sports),/ CSMT, subject to passing the prescribed Medical Examination.

“Central Railway honours its Olympic medalist Swapnil Kusale. In an apt recognition of his achievement in the Paris Olympics he has been promoted as Officer on Special Duty in Sports Cell,” the CR posted on X.

Hailing from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, Kusale had joined Indian Railways as a Commercial cum Ticket Clerk in Pune Division of Central Railway in 2015.

He has won gold medals in shooting at the Asian Games in China in 2023, World Cup at Baku in 2022 and at New Delhi in 2021. Besides, he has also won silver and bronze medals in various Shooting Championships from 2015 to 2023.

“Indian Railways has always encouraged sport persons and provided them a robust and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure with flexible working hours for practice. Indian Railway is immensely proud of Swapnil Kusale's achievement and congratulates him on this historic milestone. His dedication and hard work have brought great honour to the Indian Railways and the nation,” the CR said.
