SHOOTING: Swapnil Kusale wins bronze medal in men's 50m rifle 3 positions event

Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale kept his composure to stage a remarkable comeback and help the country claim its first ever Olympic bronze in the 50m rifle 3 positions event of the ongoing Games here on Thursday.
Kusale shot an aggregate of 451.4 in the eight-shooter final to finish third after being placed sixth at one stage. It took the country's overall tally to three, all bronze, at the Paris Games.
His medal comes following the stunning performance of Manu Bhaker, who clinched the women's 10m air pistol and mixed team 10m air pistol bronze alongside Sarabjot Singh. (PTI)

Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (50kg) bowed out of the Olympic Games after a shock defeat to Asian Games gold-medallist Wu Yu of China here on Thursday.
The unseeded Nikhat, who was making her Games debut, struggled to find her range and lost the bout in a 5-0 verdict.
Yu, the reigning flyweight (52kg) world champion, had received an opening round bye.
Nikhat, touted as one of India's strongest medal prospects before the Games, had defeated Germany's Maxi Karina Kloetzer in her opening round. (PTI)
HOCKEY: Belgium beat India 2-1

India squandered a one goal lead to go down 1-2 against defending champions Belgium in a pool match of the men's hockey competition at the Olympics here on Thursday.
Already through to the quarters, this was India's first loss in the group stage.
Abhishek gave India the lead in the 18th minute before Belgium made a strong comeback after half-time to score through Thibeau Stockbroekx (33rd) and John-John
Dohmen (44th) to seal the win and remain unbeaten in the tournament so far.
Belgium have also already qualified for the quarterfinals from Pool B.
India had defeated New Zealand 3-2 before drawing 1-1 against Argentina. In their last match, the Harmanpreet-led side beat Ireland 2-0.
India will next play Australia in their final pool match on Friday. (PTI)

India's Lakshya Sen registered a comfortable straight-game win over compatriot HS Prannoy to become only the third male player ever from the country to reach the quarterfinals of the Olympics badminton competition here on Thursday.
The 22-year-old from Almora, a reigning Commonwealth Games champion and a 2021 World Championships bronze-medallist, looked in complete control as he notched up a 21-12 21-6 win over world no. 13 Prannoy in a 39-minute pre-quarterfinal clash.
Sen joined Parupalli Kashyap and Kidambi Srikanth, who had reached the quarterfinals in the London and Rio edition of the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016 respectively.
Currently ranked 22, Sen will face 12th seed Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen in the quarterfinals. (PTI)

The unstoppable Satou Sabally scored 33 points to book Germany's place in the next round in after they also beat Belgium in their opener.
"I'm super excited. We believed in ourselves the whole time and I think now it's finally showing that German basketball is really elevated in Europe and all around the world." the WNBA Dallas Wings forward told reporters.

CANOEING: Flawless Clarke cruises into slalom final
Britain's 2016 Olympic champion Joe Clarke led the way in the men's kayak single semi-finals on Thursday, completing a flawless run in a time of 89.51 seconds that will see him go out last in the final later on.

GOLF: Storm interrupts play at men's competition
Play was suspended at the men's Olympic golf tournament on Thursday shortly before 4.30pm local time due to a storm in the local area, the organisers said.
Most of the 60 competitors had completed their first round but some including defending champion Xander Schauffele of the United States were still on the course.

World record holder Kevin Mayer of France has been ruled out of the decathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics due to a thigh injury, the French Olympic Committee said on Thursday.
The two-time Olympic silver medallist picked up the injury as he fell heavily during the 110-metre hurdles leg of a triathlon at the Paris Diamond League earlier this month.
Mayer, whose record of 9,126 points has stood since 2018, explained he had not fully recovered from the injury. (Reuters)

Delays due to poor conditions are completely normal in surfing competitions, with organisers having a 10-day window to run four days of heats - though picking those days is not always easy.
