Portugal claimed their first-ever Olympic track cycling gold medal as Iuri Leitao and Rui Oliviera blasted out of nowhere to win a crash-littered men's Madison race on Saturday.

Italy were sitting on top of the leaderboard as the 200-lap race reached its closing stages but with the peloton split to pieces, Portugal launched a sensational attack.

They won three successive sprints, bagging five points for each, then made a lap on the peloton for another 20 points and won the sprint to the finish line to make history.

Italy will rue a late crash that left Simone Consonni, brother of Chiara Consonni who won gold in the women's Madison 24 hours earlier, on the deck. He and Elia Viviani were able to continue but could not respond to Portugal's late onslaught.

Portugal won with 55 points from Italy's 47 with defending champions Denmark taking the bronze with 41.

Brazil were dangerous in the opening stages and came close to scoring when Gabi Portilho drew a great save from Alyssa Naeher shortly before halftime. Naeher did well again in injury time to claw away Adriana's header from point-blank range.

Brazil great Marta returned after a two-match ban handed down for a red card, coming on as a substitute after the hour mark, but did not have much impact as Brazil were beaten by the Americans in an Olympic final for the third time.

Barbosu and her team had appealed to CAS that an inquiry filed over the results in that event was done so past the one-minute deadline and that Chiles should not be awarded the score of 13.766 that lifted her to third place behind winner Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medallist Simone Biles of the United States.

Olympics-IOC President Bach will not seek to stay on beyond 2025

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach will not seek to remain in the post after the end of his second term in 2025 despite calls from members to stay on, he said on Saturday.

Bach, a German lawyer in charge since 2013, surprised members at the end of their session in Paris, saying he was asked to continue but would not attempt to extend his mandate.

That would have required a change in the Olympic charter that limits the president to a maximum of 12 years -- a first eight-year term and a second four-year term -- that he himself had helped draft.

"As a result of deep deliberations and extensive discussions ... I have come to the conclusion that I should not have my mandate extended beyond the limits stipulated in the Olympic Charter," Bach told the session as the Paris Olympics draw to a close.

"After 12 years in the office of IOC President our organisation is best served with a change in leadership. New times are calling for new leaders," he said, with his voice breaking and welling up.

The new IOC president will be elected in March 2025 at the session in ancient Olympia and will take over in June of that year, Bach said, to allow for a smooth transition.
