The dome-shaped arena, which would also host the boxing competitions of the Commonwealth Games later this year, has been renovated at a cost of Rs 150 crore.
Inaugurated by Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi today, the stadium's seating capacity has, however, come down from 3000 to 2700 after the renovation.

"It belongs to the boxers now. They can come here and practice for the Commonwealth Championships. It's there's," Kalmadi said.

"It's a world-class facility and meets all the requirements set by the Commonwealth Games Federation," he added. The arena will have a boxing ring erected inside by March 1.
"By March 1 or latest by March 2, a boxing ring will be erected inside," said Competition Director for the championship Lenny D'Gama.

Olympic and World Championship bronze medallist Vijender Singh, Commonwealth Games gold winner Akhil Kumar and Asian champion Suranjoy Singh were among the boxers who had demanded that the stadium be made available to them at least a week ahead of the championship.

"It's great to hear that the stadium would be available to us for training. It will help immensely because it is important to be familiar with the arena before such a major tournament," Vijender  said.

"We should start training there by March 1. It's a small thing but helps a lot if a boxer gets a feel of the arena he is supposed to compete in. That's what is home advantage after all, we should make it count like other countries," said Akhil.

Equally delighted at the prospect of an early access to the stadium was national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu."It will be fantastic to be there as early as possible. Commonwealth Championship is a test event for the Commonwealth Games and it would benefit our boxers if we can train here a few days before the tournament starts," Sandhu said.

The Indian Boxing Federation said the boxers would be called to the capital as soon as the ring is erected.

"We have been requesting the Organising Committee to put up a ring inside as early as possible because only then the boxers can train here. Now that the stadium has been inaugurated, we hope it would be done soon," said IBF Director Col A S Dagar.
India won a gold, two silver and six bronze medals in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Championships held in Liverpool.
