Brazil beat Mexico on penalties to reach men's football final

Defending champions Brazil reached the final of the men'sOlympicfootball competition on Tuesday, beating Mexico 4-1 on penalties after the game ended goalless after extra-time.

Brazil went close to settling the match inside 90 minutes when Richarlison struck the post with a glancing header in the 82nd minute.

But when it came to the shootout, they had their keeper Santos to thank for a fine save to keep out Eduardo Aguirre's spot-kick and after Mexico's Johan Vasquez hit the post, Brazil just need to keep their cool.(Reuters)

Germany claim women's team pursuit Olympic gold over Britain

Germany broke the world record for the third time in two days on Tuesday to crush Britain and win gold in the women's team pursuit.

The German quartet of Franziska Brausse, Lisa Brennauer, Lisa Klein and Mieke Kroeger set another world best time of 4min 04.242sec, which lowered the record they had set less than two hours earlier.

Britain took silver but were left trailing by more than six seconds in the final, their time of 4:10.607 a clear second best to the lightning quick Germans. (AFP)

Mao pins worn by Chinese athletes may test Olympic rules

The image of Communist China's founding leader, Mao Zedong, made an unscheduled appearance at the Tokyo Olympics, and the International Olympic Committee said Tuesday it is "looking into the matter."

The gesture — Mao pin badges worn by two Chinese gold medalists at their medal ceremony — risks being judged a breach of Olympic Charter Rule 50, which prohibits political statements on the podium at the Tokyo Games — and at the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Games. (AP)

Olympic medallists hope success boosts popularity of women's boxing

Women Olympic boxing medallists sent out a resounding message on Tuesday in Tokyo about the image of female fighters and hope their success can get more girls involved in the sport.

Sena Irie became the first Japanese woman to win Olympic boxing gold with a unanimous points decision victory over Nesthy Petecio, herself the first woman from the Philippines to pocket a medal in the sport. (AFP)

Britain's Clancy ends Olympic cycling career due to injury

British track cyclist Ed Clancy called time on his Olympic career on Tuesday after a back injury forced him out of Tokyo 2020, denying him a chance to chase a fourth gold medal.

Clancy had been due to race in the men's team pursuit heats on Tuesday after victories in Beijing, London and Rio. He also won bronze in the omnium in 2012.

British Cycling confirmed Clancy had pulled out "as a result of an ongoing back and sciatica issue, marking the end of a fantastic career spanning 20 years".

The cyclist had previously said Tokyo 2020 would be his last Olympics. (AFP)

Giles Scott won the gold medal for Britain in the men's Finn class in sailing at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour on Tuesday.

Zsombor Berecz of Hungary took the silver medal, with Joan Cardona Mendez securing the bronze for Spain.

Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya on Tuesday got a good draw as he will open his 57kg campaign in the Tokyo Olympics against Colombia's Tigreros Urbano and going by form, he should not face much difficulty in reaching at least the semifinals.

If Ravi, the 2019 World Championship bronze medallist and reigning Asian champion, wins his opener against the Colombian then he will take on either Algeria's Abdelhak Kherabache or Georgi Valentinov Vangelov from Bulgaria.

'Maniac' Warholm wins 400m hurdles gold, smashes world record

Norway's Karsten Warholm produced a devastating performance to smash his own world record and win the Olympic men's 400 metres hurdles gold on Tuesday, saying he dreamed about the medal "like a maniac".

Annu misses final of women's javelin throw event, finishes 14th

India's Annu Rani could not qualify for the women's javelin throw final at the Olympic Games, finishing 14th with a below-par throw of 54.04m here on Tuesday.

Annu began with a 50.35m throw and improved it to 53.19m in her second attempt in Group A, which had 14 contenders.

The 29-year-old needed a huge effort to make it to the 12-woman final and though she improved marginally, it was nowhere close to the automatic qualification mark of 63m. (PTI)

Simone Biles will make her long-awaited bid for an individual gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday, while the men's 400m hurdles and women's 200m finals take centre stage on the track.

American superstar gymnast Biles, who won four gold medals in Rio five years ago, has said she is struggling with the "twisties", a condition where gymnasts lose the ability to orientate themselves in mid-air.
