According to police officials, Jaima Louis William, 24, and her husband, Syed Awais Haider, 25, were shopping at Gulberg in Lahore about a week ago when some unidentified men abducted them at gun-point.
"The kidnappers made a telephone call from Awais' cell phone to his residence in Iqbal Town and demanded Rs 5 million (about USD 60,000 dollars) from his family."The family paid Rs 200,000 to the kidnappers before informing police about the incident," a senior police officer told PTI.
He said the couple had married about two years ago and had an eight-month-old boy.
"Luckily, the baby was not with them," the officer said.The couple came to Pakistan in August last year.
The kidnappers were demanding the payment of the remaining amount for the "safe release" of the couple, the officer said."The kidnappers have allowed the couple to talk to their family to tell them that they are alive," he added.
Confirming the incident, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Investigation) Rao Sardar told PTI that the couple regularly visited Pakistan after their marriage.Police are investigating the matter in collaboration with intelligence agencies, he said."We are operating cautiously for the safety of the couple," Sardar said.
