Nairobi: Sections of Kenya's parliament were on fire on Tuesday as protesters overwhelmed police to storm the compound where lawmakers had just passed a contentious bill that would introduce a raft of new taxes, a Reuters witness said.

At least ten people were shot dead and around 50 were injured in Kenya's capital, a paramedic said, as protests against tax legislation turned into violent clashes with police.

The Kenya Red Cross said that its vehicles had been attacked in anti-tax demonstrations and staff and volunteers injured.

"We can't provide life-saving interventions without access and safety for our staff and volunteers. It is crucial that we are granted access to continue our humanitarian efforts without hindrance," Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.

It did not say who had attacked its vehicles or injured its staff and volunteers.

Meanwhile, the first planeload of Kenyan police arrived in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday as part of a new security mission, disembarking a Kenya Airways plane with weapons in hand, according to a Reuters witness.

The officers are expected to lead a mission to tackle raging gangland violence convulsing the Caribbean nation, which has suffered a prolonged period of instability amid a severe humanitarian crisis.

Kenyan police streamed out of the plane at the capital's airport as a small crowd, mostly airport personnel, greeted them on the tarmac.
