As per an MoU signed between the two institutes, the partnership would help both the institutes "prepare a framework on faculty and student exchange programmes, teaching and research initiatives, conferences and publications and continuing legal education programmes," JGLS vice-chancellor C Raj Kumar said in a statement here today.

The partnership will also help in the establishment of a joint centre for global corporate and financial law and policy here, the statement said, adding, the MoU between the two institutes was signed recently.

The initiative is the outcome of the knowledge initiative launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Barack Obama during Singh's visit to the US in November 2009.

Both the leaders have exhorted on further strengthening of initiatives in the higher education sector during the ongoing visit of the US President to the country.

Last month, IIT-Kanpur and IIM-Kozikhode had joined hands with Yale University for an academic leadership programme exposing vice-chancellors of these two Indian institutes and deans to best practices of institutional management in the US.

Officials in the HRD Ministry have hinted that more US universities were willing to collaborate with Indian institutes to set up centres of excellence here to offer programmes as per the requirements.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had earlier announced that Virginia Tech of USA has decided to open three centres of excellence in Chennai dedicated to carrying out high-end research activities and producing sector-specific talents under the knowledge initiative drive.
