Lisbon: The leader of Portugal's centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD) claimed victory in Sunday's general election, though it was unclear if he could govern without the support from far-right Chega, with whom he said he wouldn't negotiate.

Luis Montenegro told a crowd of ecstatic supporters in the early hours on Monday it was crucial for political parties in the new parliament to act responsibly and "comply with the wish of the Portuguese people" that gave victory.

He reiterated his election promise not to rely on Chega to govern or strike any deals with the right-wing populists.
