Scientific garbage disposal system on anvil

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will have its own scientific garbage disposal system in place by the end of next year, Commissioner Rajneesh Goel has said.

He also said the BBMP would make segregating garbage in households (and other collection points like offices, schools, etc) mandatory starting next week.

The Palike would work out a strategy to clear the garbage from the three existing landfills namely Mandur, Terra Firma and Mavallipura, he added.

On segregating garbage at source, Goel said the Palike's role will be restricted to imparting training to people as well as garbage collectors, but would not provide garbage bins to citizens for this.

At best, the Palike will assist citizens to identify authorised dealers who supply bins, the commissioner said.

“We will pass an order to make segregation at source mandatory from Sunday, but its implementation will take too much time. We have to train the garbage collectors first,” he said.

The Palike plans to utilise Rs 237 crore, which it got under the 13th Finance Commission, to set up segregation centres in all 198 wards of the City.

To check corruption, the Palike will use Geographical Information System (GIS) to keep track of trucks transporting garbage.

Goel said plastic bags were aggravating the garbage crisis in Bangalore.

He added that the BBMP plans to enforce a total ban on use and manufacture of polythene bags of less than 40 microns in thickness.

Since Monday, the Palike has seized about 1.5 tonnes of plastic bags.
