The growing water crisis in India has been particularly prominent in states with a predominantly agricultural economy since agriculture is the largest consumptive user of water. The trend of groundwater exploitation, which was popularized to tackle the issue of food security for the country after Independence (Green Revolution: mid-1960s to mid-70s), has continued uninterrupted since then.
