Swimming off Marine Drive for the Triathlon in the National Games, a swimmer got caught in a ‘ghost net’ which was floating in the area of the sea in which he was swimming. He was lucky to have been able to free himself and make it to the shore without mishap.

Pollution : Should we be worried in Bengaluru?
Air pollution is the biggest global environmental health risk, responsible for more than 6 million deaths in 2016. Middle-income countries like ours where development and urbanization have brought increased emissions from many sources, including heavy industry and motorised transport, have outpaced air pollution control measures. Polluted air is a complex mixture of gases and aerosols and the most measured and important pollutant of concern is particulate matter (PM) which manifests as dust, soot, smog or smoke. Chemical components vary according to the source.

Come summer and Bengaluru suffers from an unquenchable thirst for water. The BWSSB has a finite amount of Cauvery water which it can supply. Thankfully, over the years, civil society and the residents of the city have realised that they need to help themselves by investing in rainwater harvesting. Buying tankers of water is not the solution and the tankers are becoming ridiculously expensive.

Winter migrants from the Himalayas
It’s that time of the year again! One can suddenly hear an unfamiliar call of a bird in the trees, quite different from the regular mynas and bulbuls we are used to. These little fistfuls of feathers, have flown into winter in our city from the Himalayas, and are the cause of much excitement among bird lovers in Bengaluru.

Early blooming in namma mango trees
Mango trees flowering in the months of November and December has become a common occurrence in Bengaluru. Strange as most old residents of the city will recall, they usually would flower only in February and bring us fruit in May. However, now in the city, the trees are heavily laden with flowers and in some cases tiny mangoes as well.
